International Museum Day is observed on May 18 every year. It was first initiated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977. The day is celebrated to raise awareness of the role of museums in the development of society and to promote their importance in the preservation of cultural heritage.

The theme for International Museum Day 2023 is “The Power of Museums”. The theme highlights the role of museums in promoting social inclusion, understanding and cooperation among people. It also emphasizes the importance of museums in preserving and sharing cultural heritage.
