The Vir Chakra is a military decoration of India awarded for gallantry in the face of the enemy. It is the third-highest peacetime gallantry award in the Indian Armed Forces, after the Param Vir Chakra and the Maha Vir Chakra. The Vir Chakra was instituted on 26 January 1950, the day India became a republic. The first awards of the Vir Chakra were made on 15 August 1950, to commemorate the first anniversary of Indian independence.
As of 2019, there have been 2,613 awards of the Vir Chakra.
