Telangana was officially formed as a separate state in 2014. The state was carved out of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The formation of Telangana was a long-standing demand of the people of the region, who felt that they were being discriminated against by the government of Andhra Pradesh. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), a regional political party, led the movement for the formation of Telangana. The TRS won the 2014 assembly elections in Telangana and formed the government. The first Chief Minister of Telangana was K. Chandrashekar Rao.
