The Preamble to the Constitution of India was amended only once, by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976. This amendment inserted three new words/phrases into the Preamble: ‘Socialist’, ‘Secular’, and ‘Integrity’. The phrase ‘Unity of the Nation’ was also changed to ‘Unity and Integrity of the Nation’.

The original Preamble (as adopted on 26th November 1949) included references to Justice, Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity of the Nation.
