Survey of India, established in 1767, is the oldest scientific department of the Government of India. It is the national mapping and survey organization of the country. It functions under the administrative control of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology.

Historically, the Survey of India was under the Home Department during British rule and continued under the Ministry of Home Affairs for some time after independence. However, it was later transferred to the Ministry of Science and Technology.
