Soap solutions, when used for cleaning, form micelles. Micelles are aggregates of soap molecules that are dispersed throughout the water. These aggregates are large enough (typically in the colloidal size range) to scatter light that passes through the solution. This scattering of light, known as the Tyndall effect, makes the solution appear cloudy or opaque. The cloudy appearance of soap solution is due to the scattering of light by soap micelles (Tyndall effect).
