Sergei Bubka is a Ukrainian former pole vaulter. He is the world record holder in the pole vault with a height of 6.15 metres, which he achieved on 31 July 1994 in Sestriere, Italy. He is the only man to have cleared 6 metres outdoors. Bubka is a six-time world champion (1983â1997) and a three-time Olympic champion (1988, 1992, and 1996). He was also a member of the Soviet Union team that won the gold medal in the 4 Ã 100 metres relay at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Bubka was born in Lviv, Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. He began pole vaulting at the age of 11 and quickly rose to prominence. He won his first world championship title in 1983 at the age of 19. He went on to win five more world titles, including three consecutive titles from 1987 to 1991.
Bubka was also a three-time Olympic champion. He won his first Olympic gold medal in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. He defended his title in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain, and won his third and final Olympic gold medal in 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Bubka retired from competition in 2001. He was inducted into the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Hall of Fame in 2012.
