Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 22-yard (20-metre) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The game proceeds when a player on the fielding team, called the bowler, “bowls” (propels) the ball from one end of the pitch towards the wicket at the other end. The batting side has one player at each end of the pitch, with the player at the opposite end of the pitch from the bowler aiming to strike the ball with a bat. The batting side scores runs when either the bowler unfairly bowls the ball to either side of the wicket, or alternatively when the ball reaches the boundary of the field. The fielding side’s aim is to prevent run-scoring and dismiss each player (so they are “out”, and are said to have “lost their wicket”). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the wicket and dislodges the bails, being caught, when a fielder catches the ball after it has been hit by the bat, and run out, when a fielder hits the wicket with the ball before the batter can reach the opposite end of the pitch.

Hockey is a team sport in which two teams play against each other by trying to maneuver a ball into the other team’s goal using a hockey stick. The game can be played on either grass or artificial turf, and is governed by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

Football is a family of team sports that involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot to score a goal. Unqualified, the word football normally means the form of football that is the most popular where the word is used. Sports commonly called football include association football (known as soccer in some countries); gridiron football (specifically American football or Canadian football); Australian rules football; rugby football (either rugby union or rugby league); and Gaelic football.

Lawn tennis is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent’s court. The object of the game is to play the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a good return. The player who is unable to return the ball will not gain a point, while the opposite player will.
