A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. He was the son of a boat owner and had eight siblings. He received his early education in Rameswaram and then went on to study physics at the University of Madras. After graduating from university, he worked as a scientist at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In 1962, he joined the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and played a key role in the development of India’s first satellite, Aryabhata. He was also instrumental in the development of India’s missile program.
A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was a visionary leader who played a key role in the development of India’s scientific and technological capabilities. He was a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. He died on July 27, 2015, at the age of 83.
