John B. Goodenough was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019 for his pivotal role in the development of the lithium-ion battery.
Along with M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino, Goodenough’s research laid the foundation for the rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which is now ubiquitous in mobile phones, laptops, electric vehicles, and other portable electronic devices.
Goodenough passed away on June 25, 2023, at the age of 100. He held the distinction of being the oldest person ever to receive a Nobel Prize. His specific contribution was identifying key materials for the cathode of the battery, enabling higher voltage and energy density.
