The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) was launched in 2005. It is a centrally sponsored scheme implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. The objective of NRLM is to eradicate rural poverty by empowering rural women through self-help groups (SHGs).
NRLM is a demand-driven and community-based program. It works through a network of SHGs, which are formed by rural women. SHGs are provided with financial and technical support by NRLM. They are also trained in various skills, such as bookkeeping, marketing, and entrepreneurship.

NRLM has also been successful in promoting rural entrepreneurship. SHGs have set up over 10 million enterprises under NRLM. These enterprises have created over 10 million jobs for rural women.
