There are three kinds of reflection available in image perception: specular reflection, diffuse reflection, and total internal reflection.

  • Specular reflection is a mirror-like reflection of light from a surface. It occurs when light hits a surface at a very shallow angle and bounces off in a single direction.
  • Diffuse reflection is a scattering of light in all directions. It occurs when light hits a surface at an angle other than a shallow angle and bounces off in many different directions.
  • Total internal reflection is a phenomenon that occurs when light passes from a medium with a higher refractive index to a medium with a lower refractive index. If the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle, then all of the light will be reflected back into the first medium.

Specular reflection is the most common type of reflection and is responsible for the mirror-like appearance of many objects. Diffuse reflection is responsible for the matte appearance of many objects. Total internal reflection is responsible for the appearance of rainbows and the way that light travels through optical fibers.
