Cyclone ‘Tauktae’, which formed in the Arabian Sea in May 2021, was named by Myanmar. The name ‘Tauktae’ is a Burmese word meaning ‘gecko’, a highly vocal lizard.
Tropical cyclones in the North Indian Ocean region are named by countries in the region on a rotational basis, following guidelines set by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Panel on Tropical Cyclones.
The list of names is maintained by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), one of the six Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres (RSMCs) authorized to name tropical cyclones. The current list comprises names contributed by 13 member countries.
