Chaudhary Devi Lal was a prominent leader of the Janata Dal political party. He was born in 1914 in a Jat family in Haryana. He started his political career as a member of the Indian National Congress, but he left the party in 1974 to form the Janata Party. He was the Chief Minister of Haryana from 1977 to 1980 and from 1987 to 1990. He was also the Deputy Prime Minister of India from 1996 to 1998. He died in 2001.
