Bihar is a significant pilgrimage destination for followers of all three religions: Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism.
- Buddhism: Bihar is home to many important Buddhist sites, including Bodh Gaya, the site where the Buddha attained enlightenment. Other important Buddhist sites in Bihar include Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, and Nalanda, a major center of Buddhist learning.
- Jainism: Bihar is also home to many important Jain sites, including Pawapuri, where Mahavira, the founder of Jainism, attained moksha (liberation). - Hinduism: Bihar is also home to many important Hindu sites, including the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other important Hindu sites in Bihar include the Vishnupad Temple, which is said to contain the footprint of Vishnu, and the Baidyanath Temple, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, or most sacred shrines of Shiva.
