Ashoka Chakra awardee Sudhir Kumar Walia belongs to Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. He was awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration, for his bravery during the Kargil War.
Walia was born in the village of Jawali in Kangra district. He joined the Indian Army in 1985 and was commissioned into the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. He was posted to the Siachen Glacier in 1999, where he fought in the Kargil War.
On July 6, 1999, Walia was leading a patrol in the Batalik sector when they came under heavy fire from Pakistani troops. Walia was hit by a bullet in the chest, but he continued to lead his men in the attack. He was killed in action, but his bravery helped to secure the objective for his unit.
