SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) was founded by seven countries in December 1985 when their leaders signed the SAARC Charter in Dhaka, Bangladesh. These seven founding members were Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan was not a signatory to the original charter; it joined SAARC much later, in 2007, becoming the eighth member.
Afghanistan joined SAARC in 2007, long after the signing of the original charter in 1985.
