Chad experienced a military takeover in April 2021. Guinea had a military coup in September 2021. Mali saw coups in August 2020 and May 2021. Sudan’s transitional government was overthrown by a military coup in October 2021. These successful military takeovers, often referred to as a “coup belt” across the Sahel region, brought these countries into international focus for political instability and democratic backsliding.
