The smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) lacks ribosomes and is involved in lipid synthesis, steroid hormone synthesis, detoxification, and calcium storage. Protein synthesis is mainly carried out by ribosomes, either free in the cytoplasm or attached to the RER.
