According to the Election Commission of India’s criteria for recognition as a National Party, one of the conditions is that the party must be recognized as a State Party in at least four States.
The other criteria for recognition as a National Party are:
1. The party’s candidates must have secured at least 6% of the total valid votes polled in any four or more states in the last Lok Sabha election or assembly elections, AND the party must have won at least 4 seats in the Lok Sabha from any State(s). OR
2. The party must have won at least 2% of the total seats in the Lok Sabha in the last election (currently 11 seats), and these seats must be won from at least three different States. OR
3. The party is recognized as a State Party in at least four States.
Recognition as a National Party confers certain privileges on the party, such as a reserved symbol, free broadcast time on state-owned television and radio, consultation in setting election dates, and the ability to field a maximum of 40 star campaigners.
