He was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1937 and became the Finance Minister of Bihar in 1937. He was the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar from 1946 to 1952. He was the Chief Minister of Bihar from 1957 to 1967. He died on 20 December 1987.
