The Vir Chakra is a military decoration of India awarded for gallantry in the face of the enemy. It is the third-highest peacetime gallantry award in the Indian Armed Forces, after the Param Vir Chakra and the Maha Vir Chakra. The Vir Chakra is awarded to officers and other ranks of the Indian Armed Forces, as well as to members of the Indian paramilitary forces and the Indian Coast Guard.

The Vir Chakra is a circular medal, 35 millimetres in diameter, with a raised rim. The obverse of the medal bears the effigy of the reigning monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse of the medal bears the Ashoka Chakra, the national emblem of India. The medal is suspended from a 32-millimetre-wide ribbon of light blue with a central stripe of orange.

The Vir Chakra was instituted on 26 January 1950, the day India became a republic. The first awards of the Vir Chakra were made on 15 August 1950, to commemorate the first anniversary of Indian independence.

As of 2019, there have been 2,613 awards of the Vir Chakra.
