Rajan was born in Chennai, India, in 1963. He received his B.A. in economics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in 1985, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988 and 1991, respectively.
Rajan joined the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1991. He was promoted to full professor in 1998 and served as the school’s dean from 2003 to 2006.
