Sarojini Naidu was the first Governor of Uttar Pradesh. She was born on 13th February 1879 in Hyderabad, India. She was the daughter of Aghorenath Chattopadhyaya, a Sanskrit scholar, and Barada Sundari Devi, a poetess. She was educated at home by her father and mother. She was fluent in several languages, including English, Hindi, Bengali, and Urdu.
She married Gopal Krishna Gokhale, a social reformer, in 1898. They had two children, a son and a daughter.
She was a member of the Indian National Congress and was actively involved in the Indian independence movement. She was also a poet and a writer. She was known as the “Nightingale of India” for her beautiful voice and her poetry.
She was the first woman to be elected President of the Indian National Congress. She was also the first woman to be Governor of a state in India. She was the Governor of Uttar Pradesh from 1947 to 1954.
She died on 2nd March 1949 in Lucknow, India.
