The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event held from 5 to 21 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was the first Summer Olympics to be held in South America, and the second time the Summer Olympics were held in a Portuguese-speaking country, after Lisbon in 1920. The Games were officially opened by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff at the Maracanã Stadium, and closed by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach. A total of 206 nations competed in 306 events in 28 sports.
