Eligibility Criteria for IRMS Exam 2024

The Indian Revenue Service (IRS) exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), is a highly competitive examination for recruitment to various branches of the Indian Revenue Service. The exam is conducted annually, and the eligibility criteria for the IRMS exam 2024 are as follows:

Nationality

• The candidate must be a citizen of India.

Educational Qualification

• The candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
• There is no specific subject requirement for the exam. However, candidates with a background in commerce, economics, mathematics, or law are generally preferred.

Age Limit

• The candidate must be between 21 and 30 years of age as on August 1st, 2024.
• The upper age limit is relaxable for certain categories of candidates, such as:
  • SC/ST candidates: 5 years
  • OBC candidates: 3 years
  • Persons with Disabilities (PwD): 10 years
  • Ex-servicemen: 3 years for the period of their service in the Armed Forces, subject to a maximum of 5 years.

Number of Attempts

• There is no limit on the number of attempts for the exam. However, the candidate must satisfy the age limit criteria in each attempt.

Physical Standards

• There are no specific physical standards for the IRMS exam. However, candidates must be physically fit to perform the duties of an IRS officer.

Other Eligibility Criteria

• The candidate must be of good moral character and conduct.
• The candidate must be medically fit to serve in the IRS.
• The candidate must be willing to serve anywhere in India.

Reservation

• Reservations are provided for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) as per the applicable rules.

How to Apply

• Candidates can apply for the IRMS exam online through the UPSC website.
• The application process typically starts in the month of February and ends in the month of March.

Exam Pattern

The IRMS exam is conducted in three stages:

1. Civil Services Preliminary Examination (CSE Prelims): This is a computer-based objective type exam consisting of two papers:

   • Paper 1: General Studies: This paper covers topics such as current affairs, history, geography, polity, economics, and environment.
   • Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT): This paper tests the candidate’s comprehension, reasoning, and analytical abilities.

2. Civil Services Main Examination (CSE Mains): This is a written exam consisting of nine papers:

   • Paper 1: Essay: This paper tests the candidate’s writing skills and ability to express their views on various topics.
   • Paper 2: General Studies I: This paper covers topics such as Indian culture, history, geography, and society.
   • Paper 3: General Studies II: This paper covers topics such as governance, constitution, polity, social justice, and international relations.
   • Paper 4: General Studies III: This paper covers topics such as technology, economic development, environment, disaster management, and security.
   • Paper 5: General Studies IV: This paper covers topics such as ethics, integrity, and aptitude.
   • Paper 6: Optional Subject Paper I: Candidates have to choose one optional subject from a list of subjects offered by the UPSC.
   • Paper 7: Optional Subject Paper II: This is the second paper of the chosen optional subject.
   • Paper 8: Indian Language: This paper is compulsory for candidates who have not studied Indian Language as a subject in their graduation.
   • Paper 9: English Language: This paper is compulsory for all candidates.

3. Personality Test (Interview): This is a subjective test conducted by a board of interviewers to assess the candidate’s personality, communication skills, and suitability for the IRS.
