Punjab has nearly 24,000 prisoners in its 25 jails across the state, including nine central jails.<\/p>\n<p>Punjab also witnessed three deaths in <a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/police\">Police<\/a> custody during the last three years. The Union minister said the <a href=\"<a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/4f8b3b8b13b36958398521dfc9596418\">https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/<\/a>national-human-rights-commission&#8221;>National <a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/human-rights-commission\"><a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/human-rights\">Human Rights<\/a> Commission<\/a><\/a> (NHRC) has recommended a total Rs 71.50 lakh compensation in judicial custody deaths cases, and Rs 13 lakh for police custodial death cases in Punjab during these three years.
