{"id":3480,"date":"2024-06-14T00:10:36","date_gmt":"2024-06-14T00:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/current-affairs\/?p=3480"},"modified":"2024-06-14T00:10:36","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T00:10:36","slug":"common-survey-to-count-tigers-and-elephants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/current-affairs\/common-survey-to-count-tigers-and-elephants\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Survey to Count Tigers and Elephants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>India will adopt a system that will count elephants and tigers from December as a common survey.<\/p>\n<p> <strong><u>Highlights:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made on August 12 on the occasion of World Elephant Day.<\/p>\n<p>The tiger survey will be held in four years, and elephants are surveyed once in five years.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2006, the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, which is affiliated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/environment-notes-for-state-psc-exams\">Environment<\/a> Ministry, has had a standardised protocol used by States to estimate tiger numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Tigers are counted based on sightings in camera traps and indirect estimation methods. Elephant numbers largely depend on States directly counting the elephants.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, techniques such as analysing dung samples have been deployed to estimate elephant birth rates and <a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/population\">Population<\/a> trends.<\/p>\n<p>There were 2,997 tigers by the 2018-19 survey and 29,964 elephants by the 2017 survey in India.<\/p>\n<p>Given that 90% of the area occupied by elephants and tigers is common, and after standardisation of estimation methods, having a common survey can significantly save costs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India will adopt a system that will count elephants and tigers from December as a common survey.
