This is a major setback for research and treatment efforts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>What is Mycetoma?<\/strong> It&#8217;s a chronic, destructive infectious disease affecting skin, tissues, and bone, primarily in developing countries.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Madura Foot&#8221; Origin:<\/strong> Initially reported in Madurai, India in the mid-19th century.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> Neglected tropical disease caused by various fungi or bacteria.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Who is Affected:<\/strong> Young adult males (15-30 years) in developing nations are most susceptible.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Geographic Distribution:<\/strong> Prevalent in the &#8220;Mycetoma belt&#8221; \u2013 tropical and subtropical regions with dry seasons, including Venezuela, Chad, Ethiopia, India, Sudan, and Yemen.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Transmission:<\/strong> Enters the body through trauma, like thorn pricks, often affecting barefoot manual workers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> Firm, painless masses under the skin (usually on the foot), which can grow, develop sores, and discharge colored grains.
