{"id":10550,"date":"2024-06-14T14:44:01","date_gmt":"2024-06-14T14:44:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/current-affairs\/?p=10550"},"modified":"2024-06-14T14:44:01","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T14:44:01","slug":"implement-official-languages-act-use-telugu-in-govt-biz-pil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/current-affairs\/implement-official-languages-act-use-telugu-in-govt-biz-pil\/","title":{"rendered":"Implement Official Languages Act, use Telugu in govt biz: PIL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A  (<u>PIL<\/u>) petition has been filed before the <a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/high-court\">High Court<\/a>, challenging the inaction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/state-government\">State Government<\/a> in implementing the<u>Official Languages Act<\/u>, 1966 and subsequent GOs notifying<u><a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/telugu\">Telugu<\/a><\/u>as the language to be used for all official correspondences within the state, including issuance of<u>government orders<\/u>(GO).<\/p>\n<p>One Guntupalli Srinivas filed the petition arguing that only 13 per cent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/population\">Population<\/a> can understand the GOs issued in English, which is unfair, unjust and a violation of the basic postulates of <a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/democracy\">Democracy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Srinivas argued that transacting government business in English creates an uninformed or misinformed citizenry. He stated that of the 8.45 crore Telugu-speaking people only 1.1 crore can understand English. Eighty-seven per cent of the population cannot understand government orders in English.<\/p>\n<p>Srinivas contended that the state government did not act on his various representations, requesting the constitution of a<u>Telugu Language Development Authority<\/u>and appointing <a href=\"https:\/\/exam.pscnotes.com\/official-language\">Official Language<\/a> supervising officers as contemplated in various GOs issued.
