The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) recently announced the development of an Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS, Maharashtra).The ESZ serves as a buffer for protected areas, reducing construction pressures around wildlife sanctuary and national parks.

About Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary:

It is Maharashtra’s second marine sanctuary, after Malvan, and is located on the western bank of Thane Creek.

The Bombay Natural HISTORY Society has designated it as a “Important Bird Area.”

The TCFS is Home to 39 mangrove species, 167 bird species such as flamingos, 45 fish species, 59 butterfly species, 67 insect species, and mammals such as jackals, among others.
