The number of donations from brain-dead patients in Nadumore than doubled to 156 in 2022 over 2021, when 60 such donations were registered.
The state, which has been the leader in organ donations till 2018, however, has not been able to get back first place. Health experts attributed the slowdown to inadequate participation by government hospitals.Telangana,which were far behind TN till a few years ago, is now at the top of the table with 194 donations.
According to Transtan, the state transplant authority, there were just 55 donations from government hospitals in Tamil Nadu in 2022.
While this is a steep increase from four and five donations recorded in 2020 and 2021 and the highest since 2008, experts say there is bigger scope.
