Wheat consumption has increased inTamil Nadudue to changing food habits and the Centre should give 15,000 MT of wheat in addition to the existing allocation of 8,532 MT per month. It could be supplied instead of rice or under open market sales scheme (OMSS).
He thanked the Prime Minister and Union minister of consumer affairs and food and public distribution for permitting Nadu to procure paddy from Sept 1 last year for the kharif season and requested the Centre to approve the same schedule for this year too at the increased MSP announced by the Centre.
He said since 98% of transactions at PDS shops in Tamil Nadu were being done using biometric authentication, only the actual beneficiaries were getting commodities from the ration shops. For more than 40 years, Tamil Nadu has been following universal PDS.
He proposed to extend supply of ragi through PDS outlets across the state if adequate supply of Millets is ensured to the state. Ragi is already being supplied through ration shops in Dharmapuri and the Nilgiris districts.
