North Eastern Tea Association celebrates 40 glorious years of service to tea industry

The North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) celebrated its 40 years of glorious service to the tea industry of Assam on October 17 at its auditorium in Golaghat with a call to make tea the national drink of India.

Assam agriculture minister Atul Bora, who was the chief guest, requested Lok Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, who was present at the function, to take up the matter of declaring tea as the countrys national drink. Bora and Tasa jointly released a logo of NETAs 40 Glorious Years.Tasa stated that after two years, the Assam tea industry will celebrate 200 years and appealed to all stakeholders to bring back the glory of Assam tea, emphasising on quality tea as the mantra.

Assam film among 12 Oscar hopefuls

Filmmaker Kripal Kalitas debut feature film Bridge ,which throws light on the devastations and hardships that floods bring to Assam villages every year, is among the 12 movies that are currently being viewed by jury members who will finally select the Indian entry to the Oscars.

The 18-member panel has started the selection of the film at a cinema hall in Kolkata, sources said.

Bridge, which bagged the Special Mention award, at the International Film Festival of India in Goa this January, is set in Assam and is a colourful canvas of an unusual struggle of a teenage girl residing along the bank of a tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra. Every year, the Brahmaputra and its tributaries flood many villages and ruin cultivation. Kalita said the films protagonist Jonaki goes through an unusual struggle caused by floods. Her plight gets aggravated by the absence of a bridge over the river.

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan bats for Odishas inclusion in Buddhist Circuit

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday wrote to his counterpart in the culture ministry, G Kishan Reddy, requesting him to include Odisha in the proposed Buddhist Circuit under the Centres Swadesh Darshan scheme. It aims to promote, develop and harness the potential of tourism in the country.

Under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, the tourism ministry has sanctioned five projects worth Rs 325.53 crore for the development of Budhist Circuits in MP, UP, Gujarat, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.

Highlighting the Buddhist heritage of Odisha, Pradhan wrote that during the Bhaumakara dynasty rule from the 8th to 10th century AD, Buddhism was considered as a state religion here. It is believed that the first disciples of Lord Buddha, Tapasu and Bhallika, hailed from the modern-day city of Jajpur. Though Buddhism entered Odisha long before the Kalinga War, it spread under the patronage of Emperor Ashoka, he added.

Tamil Nadu govt told to retrieve 62 acres of temple land in Tirusulam

Take immediate measures to retrieve 62 acres of land belonging to Arulmighu Trisoolanathar temple in Tirusulam from encroachment, the Madras high court has directed the Chennai district collector and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department.

The issue pertains to a plea moved by advocate S Xavier Felix alleging that a substantial part of the land belonging to the temple had been taken over by encroachers and the authorities did not take any meaningful steps to recover the land.

Floods in Kerala caused by mini cloudburst events: Expert

The brief, intense rain spells in a couple of regions in Kerala indicated mini cloudbursts, a factor that also led to casualties, damage and loss of properties, a scientist at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) claimed.

Citing more than 5 cm rain received in two hours in worst affected areas of Idukki and Kottayam districts, S Abhilash of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, CUSAT said it was a mesoscale mini-cloudburst type of event. Mini cloud bursts are marked by intense short spells which may not exceed 10cm in one hour-a classical definition by India Meteorological Department, he noted.

Karnataka government begins survey of Bangla SC migrants

The state government has taken up a survey to find out how many Bangladeshi Scheduled Caste (SC) immigrants are staying in various districts to recommend their inclusion in SC list.

According to a circular issued by the Dr BR Ambedkar Research Institute, Bengaluru, recently, all the joint/ deputy directors of the social welfare department have been directed to compile the number of SC population migrated from Bangladesh.

Hyderabad second most expensive residential realty market in India

The City of Nizams and Pearls has emerged as the second most expensive residential realty market in the country after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This is thanks to a steady rise in property prices on the back of robust demand.

The city has also recorded the highest growth in residential property sales for the July-September quarter, says PropTiger.coms latest report.

According to the report, average residential property prices in Hyderabad on September 30, 2021, stood in the Rs 5,800-Rs 6,000 per sq ft range (Rs 5,751 per sq ft on average) as compared to Rs 9,600-Rs 9,800 per sq ft range (Rs 9,670 per sq ft) in MMR.

Andhra Pradesh ready to hand over all Krishna projects to KRMB

The AP government has decided to hand over all its projects on Krishna river to the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) provided Telangana state also follows suit.

The government issued orders in accordance with the decision of the 15th special board meeting of the KRMB. The meeting was held in Hyderabad on July 15, following the central government issuing a gazette delegating all projects on the river to the KRMB. The decision was taken by the central government as both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states are fighting over sharing of the river water.

The AP government has decided to hand over the Srisailam Right Bank power house and the Nagarjuna Sagar right canal power house to the KRMB. The two power houses, which were kept with Andhra Pradesh at the time of bifurcation in 2014, would now go to the KRMB, for operation. The power houses on the left bank at Srisailam and the left canal at Nagarjuna Sagar were given to the Telangana state.

Bill passed to get additional Rs 775cr for govt

The Goa Appropriation (No 5) Bill, 2021, was passed in the House on Monday. The bill empowers the government to withdraw Rs 775 crore from the states Consolidated Fund as supplementary grants for the fiscal year 2021-22.

Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that average revenue expenditure till date is 45.5% across the majority of the demands while capital expenditure of various departments is around 10%.
