States in east India highly vulnerable to climate change, says first such assessment report

Jharkhand, Mizoram, Orissa, Chhattisgarh,Assam, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal, mostly eastern part of India, are highly vulnerable toclimate change, said the first of its kind national level state and district-wise Climate vulnerability assessment report, released by the science & technology ministry on Saturday. It showedMaharashtraas the least vulnerable state in the country.

It noted that Assam, Bihar, and Jharkhand have, in fact, over 60% districts in the category of ‘highly vulnerable’ districts with Karimganj in Assam being the most vulnerable.

The report titled Climate Vulnerability Assessment for Adaptation Planning in India Using a Common Framework noted that all districts or states are vulnerable, but some are relatively more vulnerable than others, requiring prioritised adaptation interventions to face the impact of such as extreme weather events, Stress on Resources“>Water Resources, Soil degradation and Desertification.

The main findings of the 2020 State of Birds Report:

In India, 50% of the 867 bird species have decreased in Population. Since 2000, the number of birds in the Western Ghats has fallen by 75%.

There are approximately 101 bird species in India that fall into the category of “high attention”, of which 442 are in the category of “low attention” and 319 are in the category of “moderate attention.”

The population of sparrows is stable. However, in major cities, their population is decreasing. The sparrow has been declared the “National Bird of Delhi”.

The number of sparrows in cities is declining, mainly due to the decline in the number of insects.

Mixed races in India are facing a severe population decline. The big Indian Bus, Macqueens Bustard and Bengal Florican are all suffering from population decline.

Odisha: Plan to develop rural roads

The state rural development department has decided to develop at least one road in one assembly constituency, which will act as rural economic corridor by ensuring allweather connectivity.

The road with total length of 15-25 km with carriageway width of 5.5 metre will be developed during the 2021-22 financial year with funding support from the .

Charge of temples: Tamil Nadu, citizens need to find a fine balance together

A section of people wants to free Hindu temples from government control. They want temples and their properties to be handed over to devotees to ensure better administration and management. These groups are also suggesting that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) board under the Government ofTamil Nadube disbanded.

There are three major grounds on which attacks are being launched against the HR&CE department. Its competency is under question in the Light of mismanagement of temples, theft of idols and lack of protection to temple properties.

In 1927, the HR&CE board was constituted and vested with the power to control and supervise administration of temples.

Annual census of Nilgiri tahrs begins

The annualcensusof theNilgiri tahrinside the main habitat ofEravikulam (ENP) begins

The ENP, Chinnar wildlife Sanctuary and Shola National Park are divided into 18 blocks and 66 officials of the forest department will collect details from each block.

The total number of Nilgiri tahr in ENP is 723, as per the last survey. After the calving season of Nilgiri tahrs, ENP was opened for visitors after two months from April 1.

Karnataka: Cashew cultivation to be encouraged in Dharwad district

Having found the climactic conditions inDharwaddistrict to be conducive to the cultivation of cashew, the Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development (DCCD), a central agency, is collaborating with the Regional Horticultural Research and Extension Centre (RHREC) in Kumbhapur to encourage more farmers to undertake cultivation of cashew across the district.

Head of horticultural extension Education unit at RHREC in Kumbhapur Prof Laxman Kukanoor said that the staff had organised seminars for farmers.

In Goa, it is used to make fenny. There are 3,900 seed processing units across the country, but those dedicated to processing cashew apples are few. Cashew apple is rich in Vitamin C. It has five times more content ofVitamin Cthan a lemon, and can be used to make jam.

Ward, village volunteer system redefined governance, says CM

Chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said the village and ward volunteer system has redefined Governance. He said thevolunteers system had shown the world how effective the welfare delivery system could be with inclusiveness.

The chief minister announced that 2,22,990 village / ward volunteers will be felicitated with Awards and a cash incentive totalling to Rs 228.74 crore. The felicitation of the volunteers would be held across the state and the programme will start in every constituency from next day after Ugadi festival.

Of the 2.6 lakh volunteers 97 percent are youngsters below 35 years and 53 per cent are Women and 83 per cent belong to SC, ST, BC and minorities, he said adding that 1.46 lakh permanent staff of village ward secretariats are locals.

Govt bans O2 cylinder export, will be diverted to health services

Health minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday issued directions to the health secretary to initiate measures to ban the export of Oxygen cylinders to other states with immediate effect, in view of the rapid rise inCovidcases. All industrial oxygen requirements will be diverted towards the health Services, Goa Medical College (GMC) and Covid hospitals.

Hospitalisations have increased over the past few days as the state witnesses a steep rise in Covid infections, and on Average, 90-100 patients require hospitalisation daily.

Police start virtual meetings to address issues

Amid the surge in Covid-19 cases in the city, to address citizens grievances and encourage public participation in solving local issues, the Mumbai Police have initiated virtual public meetings through Zoom and WhatsApp video-conferencing.

The initiative aims at reaching out to maximum people to know their grievances and issues, due to the imposition of another lockdown and come up with solutions by mutual understanding and dialogues. Virtual Communication would also help avoid public meetings and gathering.
