Tripura to use radio collars to track elephant movement

TheTripuraforest department, to reduce man-animal conflicts, has decided to use GPS-enabled devices to track jumbos movement, said deputy chief wildlife wardenKGRoy.

A Bengaluru-based company has been entrusted with the task of fitting radio collars around the neck of elephants and work is expected to be completed by December. The radio collars will help us track the movement of the wild elephants. We can take measures to push them back to forests if found anywhere near human habitations.

Assam to give scooters to nearly 36,000 meritorious students

TheAssam governmentwill distribute scooters among nearly 36,000 meritorious students, mostly girls, who have passed this year’s higher secondary examinations.

A proposal for implementing the programme at a cost of Rs 258.9 crore was passed by the state cabinet on Wednesday,Education Minister Ranoj Pegutold reporters after its meeting chaired byChief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Total 35,800 students — 29,748 girls who secured first division and 6,052 boys who secured 75 per cent marks — will get the scooters, he said.

The Department of Higher Education will also provide financial assistance for registration and Insurance to the students, he added.

Coimbatore: Corporation to reopen 22 defunct micro composting centres

The city corporation has started work to make 22 micro composting centres (MCCs), which were lying defunct, operational following a recent direction from theNational Green Tribunalto do so within four weeks.

Over 10,000 child marriages attempted in 5 years in Karnataka

Between April 2017 and March 2022, theKarnatakagovernment received complaints or tip-offs about 10,352 attempts of child marriage and 9,261 (about 90%) were prevented. In all, 860 FIRs were registered against people involved in getting minors married or at least tried it in the same period.

Experts and officials point out that most child marriages occur largely due to POVERTY, illiteracy, superstition or to ease what elders see as their burden of having a girl child.

Data of the Karnataka Women and child development department shows that 1,091 child marriages actually took place.

Of the 10,352 cases, most (3,007) were between April 2020 and March 2021, followed by the next 12 months that saw 2,819 cases. While these two years account for over 56% of all cases, the other three years (April 2017 to March 2020)together saw 4,526 cases.

Government land sale boosts Telangana non-tax income
