Odisha tops in deaths due to accidental fall from moving vehicles

The latest report on accidental deaths and suicides in India (ADSI), compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), shows that Odisha witnessed the highest number of deaths due to fall from moving vehicles in the country in 2020.

A total of 1167 people, including 158 Women, died in the state after accidentally falling from running vehicles last year, the highest

in the country, the ADSI report stated. Maharashtra stood second with 1058 such deaths whereas Madhya Pradesh was ranked third with 397 fatalities.

It must be noted that road accident-related deaths have increased by nearly 21% from 3,931 deaths in 2014 to 4,738 in 2020 in the state. This despite The Supreme Court committee on

road safety directing the to bring it down by 50% by 2020.

The ADSI finding has also placed Odisha on top when it comes to deaths caused by accidental fire due to electric short circuit. A total of 490 people died by accidental fire following electric short circuits in the state last year, with Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh reporting 186 and 158 such deaths, respectively. Odisha had also topped with 279 deaths due to accidental fire sparked by electric short circuit in 2019, the report stated.

Tamil Nadu to seek payment banking licence, could be first state to get it

TheTamil Nadugovernment is planning to seek a payment bank licence soon from theReserve Bank of Indiato help it efficiently manage its funds and effectively monitor its disbursal, while implementing welfare measures for the needy.

Kerala state legal Services authority(Kelsa) is making all-out efforts to reach freelegal aidto thetransgender personsas part of the initiatives to bring the variousmarginalisedsections into the mainstream. This was stated byKelsachairman and HC judge justiceK Vinod Chandranwhile inaugurating an awareness programme organised as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav here on Saturday.

Chandran pointed out that there are several sections, including transgender persons, being deprived of justice. Kelsa is trying to create legal awareness among them, as well as reach legal support to them. Simultaneously, Kelsa is also trying to cultivate a sense of justice among those being deprived of justice, he said.

Telangana 7th along with Gujarat in suicides

As many as 3,765 people died by suicide after consuming poison in the year 2020.
Hanging was the next means to commit suicide. Unfortunately, many resorted to drowning themselves, self-immolation, jumping off high places and using a firearm to end life.
In India, Maharashtra recorded the highest number of suicides.Telanganacount was 5.3% of the total suicides in India. The state shared 7th rank with Gujarat.
In , 8,058 persons committed suicide in 2020. In Hyderabad, 398 cases were reported.

When compared to 2019, there was a rise of 5% in suicides reported in Telangana. Hyderabad witnessed a 2.3% increase.

In Telangana, 471 farmers committed suicide and it was ranked 7th in India. The highest number of farmer suicides were reported

in Maharashtra (4,006 cases), followed by Karnataka (2016), AP (889).

27% increase in drug-related suicides in Andhra Pradesh, says NCRB report

Suicidesrelated to drug abuse and alcoholism saw 27% increase inAndhra Pradeshin 2020, compared to that of the previous year. Covid-19 is to be blamed as some people ended died by suicide for want of drugs and alcohol during the lockdown period in 2020.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report titled ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India’ says 385 people including nine Women and one transgender committed suicide in Andhra Pradesh in 2020, due to drug abuse and alcohol addiction. In 2019, 302 people, including seven women ended their life because of drug abuse and alcoholism.

Though there is no reliable data on ganja (weed, hemp, cannabis) consumption in Andhra Pradesh, it is estimated that around 0.2 per cent people use cannabis products in the state. Some people use sedative drugs, LSD and a

few others.

Experts in the Health department say curiosity, peer pressure and attempts to stimulate sexual desires are the key reasons for youngsters to get addicted to drugs such as ganja and alcohol in cities and towns. In Andhra Pradesh, every year, more people are joining the ranks of drug addicts. Drug abuse and alcoholism have been driving at least 250 to 300 persons, including a few women, to suicide every year in state, they added.

Goa looks to eliminate malaria by 2022

It has taken Goa almost three decades to reach the elimination stage formalaria. However, the battle is far from over even as the incidences of indigenous cases have hugely reduced from 25,000 cases in 1998 to 68 reported this year till September-end.

The state recorded 400 imported cases from January till September, which were detected largely among migrant labourers.

To achieve elimination status, Goa has

to see zero indigenous cases and nil deaths and is set to achieve the target by 2022 along with 15 states. The directorate of Health Services (DHS) has doubled its efforts towards this end. Goas high load of malaria is owing to migrant labourers. Whenever the influx of migrants goes up, so does the malaria caseload. It is difficult to reach a base level post-November, after the end of the malaria period from June to October.

Long-lasting insecticide (LLI) treated nets that are provided by the government of India are given to construction and other workers. LLI netss are not to be given to Goa, but for states such as Odisha and those in the north east. However, during a review meeting we informed the authorities that since Goa has a high presence of migrant labourers from other states we should be provided with LLI nets, too.
