Venkaiah Naidu stresses on water conservation

Noting the importance of rivers and their rejuvenation, vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu has asked the Centre and the to include lessons on the importance of water conservation in school curricula.

Naidu, who arrived in Guwahati on Sunday on a tour of the northeast, began his trip by inaugurating the Heritage-cum-Cultural Centre on the banks of river Brahmaputra here that once used to be the base camp of the Ahom Army that resisted the Mughals from entering vast parts of Assam in the 1671 battle of Saraighat. The Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre was inaugurated in the presence of governor Jagdish Mukhi, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other dignitaries at Panbazar.

Naidu noted the legacy of the hillock in the heart of Guwahati city where the heritage centre is located as it was the base camp of the all-powerful Ahom general, Lachit Borphukan. Later, Naidu inaugurated the northeasts first-of-its-kind PET-MRI wing at the State Cancer Institute in Gauhati Medical College Hospital. He said the medical profession should be taken as a mission and not for commission. Do it with passion for the sake of the nation, he urged the medical Fraternity.

Chief minister Sarma said the PET-MRI wing will greatly augment cancer treatment in the region. Set up with a total project cost of Rs 62 crore, this has been Indias fourth such PET-MRI machine installed at a government hospital equipped with time of flight tech.

Odisha govt push for R&D in design of electric vehicles

The has decided to set up a centre of excellence in one of the universities to promote research and development relating to design and use of electric vehicles (EVs). The government also plans to open Skill development centres in the ITIs to offer courses on repairing and servicing of electric vehicles.

The skill development and technical Education department will initiate training programmes related to jobs in the EV eco-system. Vocational courses may be designed to train EV drivers, mechanics and charging station staff. Possibility of setting up of dedicated skill development centres in the existing ITIs and diploma schools should be examined, said the minutes of a meeting of the state-level task force on implementation of the newly introduced EV Policy, 2021, held under the chairmanship of chief secretary Suresh Mohapatra on September 17.
The proposed centre of excellence will be established at one of the state-run universities funded by the state government with focus on research and development and improvement of usage and efficiency of EVs.
The government has asked the finance department to make a budgetary provision of nearly Rs 47.5 crore annually to provide subsidies to buyers of electric vehicles from this financial year.

As per the policy, financial incentives starting from Rs 5,000 to Rs 4 lakh for different categories of EVs will be provided to the buyers till 2025. Considering the current pace of registration of vehicles, it is estimated that in the next four years, the subsidy in purchase of EVs may touch around Rs 190 crore.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan urges Centre to speed up Karipur airport development

Chief ministerPinarayi Vijayanhas urged Union civil aviation ministerJyotiraditya Scindiato take steps to expedite the development of Calicut International Airport. The chief minister made the request during an online meeting held to discuss developments of in the state.

The chief minister said that the government has given administrative sanction for acquiring 152.5 acres needed for the development of the airport. Also, district collectors have been asked to resolve the opposition from residents for acquiring the land.

Rs 3,000 crore to develop Kalyana Karnataka: CM Basavaraj Bommai

Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said the government is ready to release funds to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore to KalyanaKarnatakaRegion Development Board from the next financial year, if the board spends the already granted Rs 1,500 crore.

Bommai said there is no change in the govenments stand on implanting the Mekedatu project. Nadu government does not have any power to decide on this project. So we are committed to implementing it through la v egal battle, he clarified.
The CM also said they are planning to construct balancing reservoirs to curb water wastage. BS Yediyurappa had released Rs 20 crore for preparing a related DPR. We will discuss implementation of the project with the states concerned, he said.

In a rare gesture, power utilities inAndhra Pradeshhave decided to pass on Rs 126 crore they saved through cost-effective power purchases back to users. The companies have submitted proposals to the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) seeking approval to return the money in the first quarter of 2021-22 to domestic consumers.

There have been instances earlier of true-up charges where power distribution companies have sought an increase in tariff. But this is perhaps the first time in the country that they have decided to pass on the to the consumers through true-down charges.

About 1.45 crore domestic consumers will benefit from the gesture. The state has about two crore power consumers including about 55 lakh high-tension consumers. The HT consumers, however, will not get the benefit.

State signs MoU with IFC to develop PPP projects in Goa

With the eye on world-classprojectsin Goa on a public-private PARTNERSHIP (PPP) model, thestategovernment has engaged International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the Group. Soon, theIFCwill hold meetings with various departments to identify projects.

TheMoUhas been signed in pursuance of the cabinet approval and NOC from the Union finance ministry.

As per the MOU, the IFC will do the initial screening and scoping of projects in consultation with different departments and entities, and identify projects across a range of sectors that fit within IFCs strategic developmental priorities in India.

IFC and Deloitte have formulated a structure for the screening study, and this will include an introductory/kickoff meetings with all secretaries and select departments and corporations and meetings with individual secretaries with HoDs/MDs to identify possible projects.

New Species Of Eel Found In Mumbai

A New Species of blind freshwater eel was discovered by scientists from ZSI, Mumbai.

Highlights:

The Freshwater Blind Eel species was discovered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
This is the primary such discovered species from Maharashtra and Northern western Ghats.
The species was found by four scientists namely, Anil Mohapatra, Tejas Thackeray, Praveenraj Jayasimhan, and Annam Pavan Kumar.
Scientists had collected the hypogean species a couple of years ago. They continued performing on it till now.

The Blind Eel

Species are named Rakthamichtys mumba to pay tribute to the town it had been found in.
Newly discovered freshwater bright-pink-colored species is totally blind and subterranean seafood.
The blind eel has a genetic distance of 21.6 22.8% to other known species of Rakthamicthys genus.
This is the 5th species from Rakthamicthys genus to be found in India.
This discovery is that the most remarkable one so far. Scientists had collected the hypogean species a couple of years ago. They continued working on the discovery, in the ongoing covid-19 pandemic situation.

Rakthamichthys

It is a genus of swamp eels and is endemic to India. Three species are known from the Western Ghats while one is understood from Northeast India. These species live underground.
