Climate change impacts rainfall distribution in northeast; results in prolonged dry days

Climate changehas impactedrainfalldistribution during monsoon months innortheasteven as the total amount of rain remains mostly unchanged. On the eve ofWorld Environment Day, experts said this lack of uniform distribution of rainfall throughout the monsoon months has resulted in prolonged consecutive dry days and shorter wet days.

Research on rainfall patterns atAssam Agricultural University(Aau) revealed a decreasing tendency of annual rainfall by 66.4 mm/decade during 1986-2015 over theBrahmaputra valleyof Assam. This decrease of annual rainfall in the valley was mainly contributed by the decrease in monsoon rainfall by 53.4 mm/decade, with statistically significant decrease of September rainfall in the upper (39 mm/decade) and central (35 mm/decade) parts of the valley and July rainfall in the lower (77 mm/decade) part of the Brahmaputra valley.

The annual Average rainfall over northeast is 2162 mm, which varies from 4275 mm (Meghalaya) to 2250 mm (Nagaland). The annual rainfall in Assam is about 2352 mm. Monsoon season contributes the highest amount of annual rainfall (65%) while pre-monsoon, post-monsoon and winter seasons contribute about 25%, 7% and 3% to the annual rainfall of the region respectively.


Gadkari lays foundation stone for two NH projects in Assam

Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone for two national highway (NH) projects in Assam.

The minister also inaugurated two NH projects in the northeastern state. The total cost of all the four projects is about Rs 1,450 crore.

Gadkari virtually laid the foundation stone for the construction 4-lane Mangaldai Bypass (15 km) on NH 15 at a project cost of 535 crore, and the construction of a 13 km four-lane Daboka-Parakhuwa stretch on NH 29 worth Rs 517 crore.

It is the direction of the Prime Minister to give priority to the development of road and projects in Assam and the entire northeast. In this regard, agencies have been created to undertake road and infra projects in the northeastern states to provide them with better connectivity throughout the year, he said.

‘Centre to establish 87 Ekalavya schools in Odisha

Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Bishweswar Tudu visited Gajapati district for laying the foundation stones of various developmental projects.

Tudu first inaugurated a memorial temple of the founder of Shabar Samaj Kalyan Samiti and eminent social reformer late Pradhani Gamang at N Jhalar Singh under Nuagadh block and then attended a programme on the occasion.

Acting president of Shabar Samaj Kalyan Samiti Trinath Shaba presided. Mohana MLA Dasharathi Gamang, State BJP leader Bhrigu Baxipatra, Shabar Samaj Kalyan Samiti editor Krishnachandra Gamang were present.

Later, Minister Tudu participated in the ground-breaking and foundation-laying ceremony of Eklabya Adarsh Residential School at Tekubul in Nuagadh Block and Subhadrappur in Rayagad Block.

In order to provide good and quality Education to tribal students in India, the Modi Government has decided to build more than 700 Ekalavya residential schools across the country and 87 of them will be established in Odisha, Tudu said.

Indias first offshore wind energy to come up off Tamil Nadu coast

India will add 58 GW of capacity over the next seven years at an Investment of over 4 lakh crore. This would take the cumulative installed capacity of onshore wind energy to 100 GW as part of the Centres plan to create 500 GW of non-fossil fuel based installed capacity by 2030. Currently, 42.8 GW of onshore wind energy has been installed.
On the other hand, the Union ministry of new & RENEWABLE ENERGY will float a tender for seabed licensing to setup 4 GW of India’s firstoffshore wind energyoffTamil Nadu coastbefore the end of CY2023.

Meanwhile, Union ministry of new & renewable energy is tapping the offshore wind energy potential and identified 14 sites, each with a capacity to install one GW, off theTamil Naducoast in the Gulf of Mannar. Tenders would be floated before the end of this year for the seabed license, wherein the successful bidder would prepare the detailed project report in five years. In the first phase, bids would be for leasing out 4GW of power through open access, captive, bi-lateral third party sale and merchant sale.

Vimukthi Mission to resume anti-drug activities in schools

With the new academic year set to begin on Thursday,Vimukthi Missionunder the excise department will resume its activities in schools to fight drug abuse among students.Ernakulamexcise division has already started preliminary works for this in the district.

Though the usual awareness activities will be held, Vimukthi Mission aims at more interventional and enforcement-level activities in schools this year.
The plan is to ensure that drugs do not reach schools or their surroundings, prevent drug sales near schools and use of children as carriers and make teachers and students cautious about drug abuse and sales.

It is learnt that the planned activities include a screening of students to identify drug abuse among them and do the needful. For this, teachers’ help will be sought and they will be trained by psychological counsellors of Vimukthi and Health departments.

Govt focused on manufacturing industries, decentralisation: Patil

The new government will focus on strengthening the manufacturing industries in the state, said minister for major and medium industries MB Patil.

Interacting with media persons at his residence here, he saidKarnatakais on top in the country in the IT/BT sector. However, the manufacturing sector needs encouragement, he added.

An action plan is being prepared to develop the Industrial Sector in the state by studyingPunjabandTelanganamodels. In Punjab, the offices of energy, Environment and other related departments are in one location, which will make the industrialists’ job of obtaining clearances easier. In , the single-window system has helped industries immensely. However, in Karnataka, the so-called single window system has become a multi-window system and steps will be taken to ensure that all clearances are available to industries in one place by keeping only one window, the minister said.

Patil said it has come to his knowledge that some people are using the land allotted for setting up industries for real estate business. The industries department is committed to stopping this, he said.

Telangana govt spending Rs 12,000 crore per year to provide free power to farmers: CM K Chandrasekhar Rao

Andhra educational institutions put up poor show in NIRF rankings

The higher educational institutions ofAndhra Pradeshput up a poor show inthe nationalinstitutional ranking framework-2023 (NIRF-2023), the results of which were released.

Andhra University was the only institute to find a place in the list of top-100 institutions of the country, apart from Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation University. However,AndhraUniversity has been consistently slipping in its ranking in the overall category for the last several years from 29th place in 2019 to 36th place in 2020 to 48th place in 2021 to 71st position in 2022 to 76th position in 2023.

Even in the universities category, the ranking of Andhra University has slid to 43 (from 16 in 2019 to 19 in 2020 to 24 in 2021 to 36 in 2022).SriVenkateswara University (92nd rank) was in the top-100 institutions list in 2021. But the institute could not achieve the feat in the last two years.

To facilitate the people in getting their routine administrative works done in a smooth and hassle-free manner at the tehsil level, Punjab Government will introduce comprehensive reforms, including making available all the land records online and also in simple Punjabi language.

The decision was taken by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday while chairing a high-level meeting of the Punjab Land Record Society. Mann emphasized on introducing these reforms to facilitate the people. All the records pertaining to land must be put online so that people are benefitted from it and they can get the land record in a single click. The land record must be available in simple Punjabi language so that the people do not face any sort of inconvenience in reading it, he added.

The Chief Minister asked the officers to ensure that all the records in the state are fully digitized. Record Rooms, both at State as well as District and Sub-Division levels, should be maintained with the highest quality. To bring transparency and efficiency in the working of the Revenue Department, the registration works and office jobs will be made faceless, he added.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the computerization projects of the Department of Revenue in the state and batted for its early completion. He said that the civil works and furniture for construction and renovation of District Administrative Complexes, Tehsil Complexes, Sub Tehsils Complexes, Modernization of Sub Registrar Offices, Patwar workstations, and Fard Kendras must also be ensured in a time-bound manner.
