India successfully launched Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo System (SMART) On 13 December from Abdul Kalam Island, off the Odisha coast
Highlights:
The mission successfully demonstrated the full range capability of the missile.
The SMART system has been developed to improve anti-submarine warfare power past traditional torpedo ranges.
This was a textbook launch, in which the entire course of the test was observed by the electro-optic telemetry system and several range radars, which includes downrange instrumentation & down range ships.
SMART carried a torpedo, escape mechanisms and parachute delivery system.
It was established from a ground mobile launcher and can cover a range of distances.
The DEFENCE Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has designed the weapon for the INDIAN NAVY.
