Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot creates 19 more districts, 3 new divisions in election year

In a much anticipated move, CM AshokGehlotannounced the creation of 19 newdistricts, including newly carved ones following the reshaping of the existing Jaipur and Jodhpur districts, on Friday.
The announcement was made during the CM’s reply to the Budget debate in the assembly. The CM also declared adding three new administrativedivisions- Sikar, Banswara and Pali – to the list of existing seven.

With 50 districts,Rajasthannow has the third highest number of districts in the country after Uttar Pradesh (71) and Madhya Pradesh (53). In terms of Population, the state is seventh.

The present Jaipur district has been divided into four new districts – Jaipur North, Jaipur South, Dudu and Kotputli-Behror. The CM’s bastion of Jodhpur has been reshaped into three districts – Jodhpur East, Jodhpur West and Phalodi.

Deteriorating law and order was also an element behind the downsizing of giant districts. Interestingly, there was no popular demand for the creation of Jaipur North and South or Jodhpur East and West as separate districts. Ajmer district has been divided into Ajmer, Kekri, and Beawar districts. Of all the newly created districts, the demand for Beawar is 40 years old.
