Panel for Withdrawal of AFSPA From Nagaland

In the aftermath of the killing of six civilians in an Army ambush on December 4, 2021, the Union Government formed a high-level committee to look into the withdrawal of AFSPA from Nagaland on December 26, 2021.

Highlights:

A Secretary-level officer chairs the five-member committee. Vivek Joshi, India’s Registrar General, and Census Commissioner will lead the committee.

Piyush Goyal, the Union Home Ministry’s Additional Secretary, will serve as the committee’s Member-Secretary.

The committee also includes the Nagaland Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, as well as the DGP of the ASSAM RIFLES.

Six civilians were killed in an Army ambush in Nagaland recently, prompting the formation of the committee.

Following the incident, calls to repeal AFSPA have become increasingly loud.
