The number of organ donations inMaharashtra, where the country’s first heart and first cadaver kidney transplants took place, is falling.
Till 2019, Maharashtra led other states with 160 deceased donations that made liver, kidney, heart, lungs, among other organs available for 449 patients with end-stage disease. The topper has dropped to number four this year.
While the pandemic led to a drop in donations in Maharashtra-75 in 2020 and 85 in 2021-some other states registered a rise during the trying time. climbed from 75 in 2020 to 170 this year. Gujarat, which had 70 donations in 2021, has 50% more donations than Maharashtra this year with 126 donors. Karnataka, at number 3, has 114 donations this year.
