Birsa Munda was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, folk hero and a religious leader. He belonged to the Munda tribe. He led the tribal religious millenarian movement, arising from Bengal Presidency (now Jharkhand) during the British Raj, in the late 19th century. This movement made him a significant figure in the HISTORY of Indian independence movement. This revolt was mainly concentrated in the Munda belt of Khunti, Sarwada, Tamar and Bandgaon. His portrait has found place in Museum, making him the only tribal leader to get this much honour.
Birsa Munda was born on November 15, 1875, at Ulihatu village in Lohardaga district of Bengal Presidency. It is now in Khunti district of Jharkhand. He was born on a Thursday. Thus, he had been named after that day in accordance with Munda custom.
