Haryana faces urea shortage, farmers issue ultimatum

With the main Rabi sowing period set to end in a month, aureacrisis seems to be brewing inHaryana. Though state Agriculture-notes-for-state-psc-exams”>Agriculture minister JP Dalal has claimed that the state boasts of ample stock of urea,farmersin his own Loharu assembly constituency in Bhiwani district who are forced to stand in long queues to get the fertilizer tell a different story.

In fact, the entire sowing season has been marred with the shortage of the crucial fertiliser while the government has been claiming that all is well. Farmers in Bhiwani have now given the agriculture minister an ultimatum, stating that if urea is not available by December 23, they will not allow him to enter his constituency and would launch a protest.

Urea is a source of nitrogen. According to Baljeet Singh Bhayan, an expert, nitrogen is the most important of the 16 nutrients since it boosts crop Growth. Urea is given first during the sowing period, followed by a 30-day interval till the first Irrigation.
