Govt will need 7,700cr more to give free power: Report

An internal report prepared by the government to counter the announcement made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to provide 300 units of free electricity, has pegged the financial burden at Rs 7,700 crore per year for the perk.

A key source close to the development said that of the total 1.61 crore domestic electricity connections in the state, those consuming less than 300 units of electricity per month amount were about 1.21 crore. The will have to make an additional provision of Rs 7,700 crore to provide free electricity to 1.21 crore connections, the source said. The state government has been bearing a whopping Rs 8,400 crore Agriculture-notes-for-state-psc-exams”>Agriculture power subsidy to farmers every year, he added.
