Diabetes cases likely to go up further in Tamil Nadu, say docs

Diabetologists have highlighted that cases ofdiabetesare increasing every year and with the impact of Covid-19, the disease burden can increase especially among the young Population.
As per the data from thethe National Family Health Survey, two decades back the prevalence of diabetes in adult population was around 3 per cent in rural areas and 5-6 per cent in urban areas inTamil Nadu. However, it has now risen to 8 per cent in rural areas and 12-14 per cent in urban areas. The numbers are expected to increase further, especially as obesity is now on the rise among adolescent children.

At the same time, SARS nCoV-2 virus can damage pancreatic cells as well which can lead to diabetes but it is reported in only around 1 per cent of cases.
