Telanganas economic activity took a big hit during 2nd wave

Telanganaalong with West Bengal and Assam bore the brunt during the second wave of Covid-19 by registering negative values on the economic activity index (EAI).

Stating this in its latest EAI report, the Reserve Bank Of India which released such a report for the first time said had only 11 months of positive EAI values between March 2020 and February 2022, while the remaining months reported negative (restrictive) values.

The negative value of EAI was the highest for Telangana in April 2020, which stood at 2.12, among all the states in the country. During the second wave beginning from February 2021, the negative values stood at 0.18 and in May last year, the state recorded a negative value of 0.25.

While the EAI values improved after the first wave receded, the economic activity took a hit with the arrival of the second wave, the report said.

Telangana spirals out of pandemic cloud with Rs 1,000 crore revenue surplus

Telanganahas shown promising signs of recovery from the pandemic in the first couple of months of this fiscal, with the state recording a revenue surplus of 1,042 crore.

The state has also spent 18% of its budget on , which is the second highest in the country, as per the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) monthly report at the end of May.

As per the CAG reports for other states, apart from Telangana (18%), states which have spent more than 10% of the budgeted estimates on capital expenditure for April and May are Andhra Pradesh (29.7%), Haryana (13.7%),Rajasthan(13 %),Madhya Pradesh(12.6%) andKerala(10.7%).

The financial recovery of the state can also be gauged from the fact that while last year there was a general decline in the frequency of use of overdraft facility (special drawing facilities) by many states in India, Telangana and AP continued to use it, suggesting they may have been experiencing periods of low liquidity. But this year the high spend on capital expenditure is indicative of recovery in the two states.

Telangana farmers average monthly income 5th lowest among large states

According to income data for agricultural households between July 2018 and June 2019 (the most recent available data), Odisha has the lowest average monthly income at Rs 5,112, followed byWest Bengal(Rs 6,762), Bihar (Rs 7,542), and Uttar Pradesh (Rs 8,061). The highest is inPunjab(Rs 26,701), followed byHaryana(Rs 22,841). The national average is Rs 10,281.
The poor income of farmers in Telangana is despite the state setting aside 13.5 % of its budget for agriculture and related activities. In comparison, rest of the states with low income for agriculture households have a far lower budget allocation.

According to experts, there are a variety of reasons why Telangana farmers have low income, including the cost of cultivation being one of the highest in the country.

Kanti Velugu scheme to resume next yr

Johnson & Johnson sells its largest India plant

Johnson & Johnson (J&J), which is struggling with slowdown of demand for its consumer products in India, has sold its largest manufacturing plant in the country atPenjerlain toHeteroon a slump sale basis, according to a report in ET. The financial details of the sale were not disclosed, the report said. A J&J spokesperson did not comment on the matter.

J&Js manufacturing plant (55.3 acres) was completed in 2016 to make consumer Health products, including babycare range, beauty, earbuds, electrolyte drinks, oral and skincare. The plant, however, has been idle ever since. The company had to take an impairment charge of about Rs 310 crore and put up the plant for sale, according to the report.

According to the companys annual report, J&J had valued its land asset at Rs 33.1 crore in 2020-21.

This is the second plant sold by J&J in India. In 2021-22, it sold its medical division unit inBaddi, Himachal Pradesh, as part of its strategic management decision, according to the report.

River projects: Telangana govt yet to give consent for takeover

The Godavari and Krishna river management boards sent the copies of the resolutions of the board meetings held on Monday and Tuesday to the and asked it to come out with government orders (GOs) accepting the takeover of the Irrigation projects by the two boards.

However, the state government did not issue any GOs for the takeover of irrigation projects on Godavari and Krishna by the two boards. Till late night on Wednesday, the government was yet to issue any GOs in this regard.

Sources said the Telangana government is of the view that the deadline for takeover is October 14 and there was no need to hurriedly issue GOs on October 13 itself. Also, the state government is still trying and is hoping that the Centre may defer the takeover as chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. A senior official in the state government said that they need to examine the proposal and resolution of the two boards before acting on them.

The Tropical Legumes Project developed 266 types of extended legumes and half of a million tons of seeds for a variety of legume crops, which includes cowpeas, pigeon peas, chickpea, frequent bean, groundnut, and soybean. The accelerated seeds benefitted over 25 million farmers in Climate-resilient tactics and to manage pest outbreaks throughout the region.

Dry spell in Telangana leads to poor water inflows for dams

The dry spell in continued on Thursday, as the state, barring Kothagudem, Khammam, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Mahbubabad, Nirmal and Medak which received 5 cm to 11 cm of rainfall on the day received scanty rainfall.

All major reservoirs in Telangana, under the Godavari and Krishna basins, are witnessing poor inflows due to the conditions.

While in 2022, major projects under the Krishna and Godavari had water of 389 TMC ft, the figure is down to 285 TMC ft, during the same period, this time around. This has had a critical negative impact on Agriculture-notes-for-state-psc-exams”>Agriculture operations in the state as well.

In the Godavari basin, the Sriramsagar project clocked a water level of 1066.6 feet and storage of 22.924 TMC ft on Thursday. On the same date in 2022, it had 73.54 TMC ft gross storage and a water level of 1087.1 feet. Inflows reached 10,429 cusecs on Thursday, with Godavari River accounting for 4,629 cusecs from catchment areas and 5,800 cusecs from the flood flow canal in reverse-pumping mode.

The water storage level of the Yellampalli reservoir was recorded at 13.935 TMC ft, against its full capacity of 20.175 TMC ft.

Centre asks Telangana to stop power generation on Krishna

The Union Government on Thursday asked to stop drawing of water from Krishna river for power generation.

The Union Jal Shakti ministry, in a letter to TS Genco, asked it to stop power generation with immediate effect at Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar and Pulichintala projects on Krishna river. The letter, written by Jal Shakti ministry member (power) LB Muanthang, was addressed to director (hydel), TS Genco.

The ministry letter insisted that Telangana should follow the agreements and orders on sharing of water. It also referred to the complaints given by the AP government against the release of water from Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar and Pulichintala for power generation by Telangana.
