Telangana colleges ignore NAAC tag, put education quality under lens

With only 11% of higher educational institutions inTelanganabeing accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), the council has now asked the state higher Education department officials to take up an internal survey to know the reasons for not initiating or accelerating the accreditation process.

The NAAC had conducted a state-wise analysis of accredited higher education institutions in and released a report on October 26 in Bengaluru.

The report indicates that of the 1,976 colleges in Telangana, only 141 have a valid accreditation. Of these, 35 are government colleges, 19 are grant-in-aid colleges and 87 are private or self-financed colleges. Nationally, 21% colleges are NAAC accredited.

The NAAC accreditation assesses institutions on TEACHING, Learning and evaluation, research and innovations, Infrastructure and learning Resources, student support and progression, Governance and management, helping students to gauge quality of education in an institute. Based on the performance in each aspect, institutions are awarded grades A+, A, B++, B+, B, C and D.

While other states such as Maharashtra,Karnatakaand Kerala fare much better, Telangana is yet to make a mark.

As per NAAC figures, more than 200 colleges from Telangana are now at various stages to secure NAAC accreditation.

Telangana govt green signal to auction Kokapet land

In its GO, the government made it clear that the rights on the land belong to government and that the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will conduct the auction as a government agent.

The government is keen on earning a total Rs 5,000 crore by auctioning these lands. So far, the HMDA made Rs 2,000.37 crore by auctioning Kokapet lands alone.

Govt urged to list biodiversity heritage sites in Telangana

The was on Tuesday urged to list potential Biodiversity heritage sites if it wanted its biodiversity strategy to succeed.

Addressing a workshop organised by theTelangana State Biodiversity Board(TSBB),J Austin Mohan, secretary ofNational Biodiversity Authority, asked the state to create a mechanism to demarcate environmentally sensitive areas as they prepare the State Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (SBSAP).

The event was organised in a bid to ensure that various aspects of Biodiversity conservation were considered in Telanganas SBSAP. As of date, only nine states have their own SBSAP in the country.

University of Hyderabad gets Rs 6 crore for research on tomato

University of Hyderabad(UoH) has received funding of Rs 6 crore from the department of Biotechnology (DBT) to take up research on plant metabolomics (study of small Molecules) and proteomics (study of proteins) over a period of four years at Repository ofTomato Genomics Resources(RTGR).

Established in 2010, RTGR conducts advanced scientific research in the frontier areas of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics oftomatoin order to improve the Nutrition and shelf-life of tomatoes. Given its scientific contributions, DBT recognised RTGR as a centre of excellence for genome engineering in tomato.

Telangana number 1 in India in annual growth rate of own income

Telanganaranks first in the country with the highest Average annual Growth rate (AAGR) of states own income as per the latest data on economy of states from the Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation.

Currently, the states own annual income is Rs 66,688 crore and a growth rate of 11.52% since its formation in 2014.

Odisha is second with AAGR of own income at 9.74%,Jharkhandis third (8.9%), UP fourth (8.6%) and neighbouringAPfifth (8.38%). Among the bigger states,Gujaratis last at 2.59%.
Announcing the latest estimates from the Union Government, state finance minister THarish Raostated on Monday that has seen a 90% increase in state income collection from 2014-15 to 2020-21. Telanganas own income during the formation year (2014-15) was Rs 35,146 crore.

At 2,800, Telangana among top 10 states in number of people paying GST

Telanganahas made it to the top ten states making a substantial contribution to Goods and Services Tax (GST). It has come in sixth in the country with 2,863 such tax payers who will be applauded by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes andCustoms(CBITC) with appreciation letters.

As the GST rollout has completed four years, an analysis shows thatMaharashtrahas highest number of GST payers at 15,131 followed by Karnataka, Nadu,Haryana, West Bengal and Telangana.

Among the taxpayers from Telangana, 36% are from micro enterprises, 41% from small entrepreneurs and 11% from medium enterprises. The data has been collected by National Institute of PUBLIC FINANCE And Policy (NIPFP).

NIPFP has also pointed out that between July 2017and January 2020, Rs 1,874 crore GST was evaded in the state and Rs 805 crore was recovered. Effectively, 43% of the evaded tax was recovered.

In fact, for the past four years, the state has seen a 10% Growth in GST each year. During the 2020-21 financial year when the lockdown impacted economic growth, GST collections fell compared to other major states. Data of GST collection between April and August 2019-20 and 2020-21 shows that there was a decline of 26.3% in collections.In 2019-20 the state collected Rs 15,949 crore between April and August as against Rs11,762 in 2020-21.
