Invest TN 2.0 is for real

A quarter of a century after liberalisation brought global manufacturing giants to Nadu, another Investment boom is on. The state has clocked the highest rate of Growth in investments nationally in the April-December 2021 period, ahead of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, according to the latest survey by Projects Today.

With total investments of Rs 1,43,902 crore from 304 projects up from Rs 36,292 crore in the year-ago period TN has clocked a jump of Rs 1,07,610 crore in the first nine months of the fiscal. Add to this a nearly $2 billion infusion in private Equity and VC funding and you get an idea of why Invest TN 2.0 is a real thing.

Part of it is fuelled by the EV boom which has brought more than Rs 19,868 crore of investments to the state. But, investments are also flowing into automotive manufacturing, IT and electronics, aerospace and DEFENCE, textiles, pharma and general manufacturing, say Industry and analysts.

Tamil Nadu aim to help Foxconn fix things

When reports about labour unrest trickled in fromi-phone makerFoxconns facility atSriperumbudurlate last month, the Nadugovernment moved in swiftly.
With a grand agenda to make Tamil Nadu a $1 trillion economy by 2030, the state could not afford to send any wrong signal to global investors even though the issue was only between the companys contractors and a section of the workers over the food served and living conditions.

For the record, Tamil Nadu has the largest number of employees in the organised sector across the country. The state always had good industrial relations that came in handy to market it as a destination for global investors.

The process is now on with the district collectors forming committees and officials inspecting the sites, certifying the hostels based on safety and hygiene and limiting the number of Women assigned per room.

Tamil Nadu govt keen on reforming recruitment process: Minister

Nadufinance ministerPalanivel Thiaga Rajan said the GO to make qualifying in aTamilexam mandatory for all government jobs is the beginning of a reformation. He said the government is working on bringing in a robust change on the ecosystem of the recruitment boards in the state.

There was no uniformity in recruitment boards, including theTamil Nadu Public Service Commission, the Medical Recruitment Board and the Forest Recruitment Board, said the minister and added that they need a massive change and reformation to standardise the procedure.
As on date, the sanctioned posts in government sectors is 14 to 15 lakh and the present headcount of the government staff is around nine lakh. Besides a large number of vacancies in the government departments, the backlog vacancies breached 30,000.

Ahead of the festival season,Tamil Naduhas gone on a hyper vaccination mode to cover entire populations in two major tourist destinations – Ooty and Kodaikanal – with at least one dose, health ministerMa Subramaniansaid.

Besides tourists’ destinations, healthcare providers have been vaccinating towns with popular places of worship. For instance, vaccinations with at least one dose has been completed for all adults inPalani. The coverage with one dose is likely to be completed in other places of worship such asVellankani, Nagur and Tiruvannamalai. “In the next four or five days, we will be completing vaccinations atNagaurand Vellankani, where more than 95% of adults have taken the first dose,” he said.

Tamil Nadu govt unveils policy for natural gas supply to households

To speed up supply of piped natural gas to homes across Nadu, the State Government has come up with a detailed policy and appointed theTamil NaduIndustrial Development Corporation Ltd (TIDCO) as the nodal agency. The target is 2.28 lakh domestic connections and 2,785 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations covering all 38 districts within eight years.
The Centre had given the first contracts to build city gas distribution (CGD) Infrastructure in 2018, including for Chennai and neighbouring districts. The CGD Network is being built in 15 districts and the contracts for the remaining 23 districts have also been authorised. Building CGD infrastructure will cost around 35,000 crore and create jobs for around 20,000 people, both directly and indirectly.
TIDCO to hold meetings monthly to check status of CGD works
Apart from the state-level nodal agency, the policy named district collectors as district-level nodal officers. TIDCO will hold meetings with the officials concerned on a monthly basis to check the status of CGD works.

Tamil Nadu seeks Kerala nod for repair of Mullaperiyar dam

State Resources“>Water Resources minister Duraimurugan has written to hisKeralacounterpart K Krishnankutty on Thursday seeking permission to carry out routine repair work atMullaperiyardam and other work as directed by The Supreme Court and Central Water Commission.

The minister said that the Nadugovernment is committed to maintain the dam considering the safety an d security of the people of both the states.

Duraimurugan said that Mullaperiyar dam is vital for the farmers as well as meeting the drinking water requirements of five drought pro ne southern districts of Tamil Nadu from Madurai to Ramanathapuram and that the farmers of these districts are very sensitive to availability of water from the dam.

10 Chola era memorial pillars for Tamil merchant guild discovered

ThePudukottai archaeology researchforum, during a field study conducted nearPonnamaravathitown in Pudukottai district, has discovered 10 memorial pillars erected for the members of aTamil merchant guildthat served during the period of Rajendra Chola I and Kulottunga Chola I. Epigraphists said that the multiple memorial pillars with inscriptions stating name of the emperors signify the prominence ofmerchant guilds, members and the warriors, who were protecting the group during the Chola dynasty.

Out of the 10 pillars discovered on the banks of the Konnaipatti tank near Ponnamaravathi, inscriptions only on nine pillars were readable. The pillars have a varying height of five to seven feet and the base is square in shape. According to the inscriptions, the 10 members of a Tamil merchant guild seem to have died due to unspecified reasons in different years, so the memorial stones were said to be different to the hero stones. The inscription mentions the name of Rajendra Chola I, epigraphists said. One of the merchants for whom apillarwas raised, identified him as Gangaikonda Chola Setti, presumably named in the honour of Rajendra Chola addressed as Gangaikondan. Other names in the stone pillars include Kundran, Saththan, Marudhan Setti, Poolankulathan, Mummudi Chola Sithilatti and Sirappan.

TN not against NEP, says Union minister

Unionminister of state for Education SubhasSarkarsaid no state, including Nadu, is against National Education Policy (NEP). No state opposes the policy directly, but only has some observations.

On Tamil Nadus strong opposition to the implementation of NEP and setting up of a committee to formulate the states own education policy, he said, NEP has numerous advantages for students as it is in favour of science, technology and truth. All central universities have started implementing the policy, Sarkar said.

Tamil Nadu to seek payment banking licence, could be first state to get it

TheTamil Nadugovernment is planning to seek a payment bank licence soon from theReserve Bank of Indiato help it efficiently manage its funds and effectively monitor its disbursal, while implementing welfare measures for the needy.

Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Nadu minister for finance and human Resources management, told reporters on Monday that the state could become the first to get such a licence. But prior to that, we have to create necessary Infrastructure and link the sub-treasuries. It will not take five years to get it. Maybe a few months from when we put up the papers,Thiaga Rajansaid.
The finance minister had stressed on the need, while presenting the revised budget on August 13 this year, for linking the 250-odd sub-treasuries for effective monitoring of disbursal and Remittances.

In order to prevent recurrence of such instances of idle non-utilisation of funds in the future, direct disbursal of funds from the government treasury to the ultimate beneficiaries will be soon done through anIntegrated Financial andHuman Resources Management System (IFHRMS).
